Kilner jar suppliers

Kilner is one of the great British brand names in kitchenware, established in the 19th century to serve a specific purpose and still valued today for its practicality and its style.

The original Kilner jar suppliers

The company behind Kilner jars was established in the 1840s by John Kilner in Thornhill Lees in Dewsbury. In 1857 John Kilner died and his four sons took over the running of the company, producing glass jars and bottles for home preserving.

The Kilner jar as we know it today wasn’t created until the end of the 19th century, by which time John Kilner’s grandsons had also joined the business and the company had opened a second factory in Conisbrough in the Don Valley. It has remained in almost unchanged form since then. Its longevity is due to the simple but very effective pressure seal mechanism, which ensures effective preserving of all sorts of fruits and vegetables at home or in a commercial environment.

The Kilner family sold the trademarks and patents for the original Kilner jar design to The United Glass Bottle Company in 1937, which were then bought by The Rayware Group in 2000. Since then, The Rayware Group has developed and expanded the Kilner range without compromising upon the quality and practicality which have stood the test of time and made the brand a household name.
